Facebook graphical Search

Facebook Announcement: Graph Search Introduced!

Facebook's big announcement today(01-15-2013) involved the unveiling of a customized Facebook search engine called Graph Search. So what is this thing's deal?

"Graph Search is not a web search," said CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Zuckerberg and the tool’s creators showed how you can use Graph Search to dig through Facebook to find exactly who or what you want to find.

Zuckerberg, for example, said he and wife, Priscilla Chan, recently used it to search for “Mexican restaurants nearby that my friends have been to.”

“We found a place and it was good,” he reported.

The Facebook crew also emphasized how Graph Search will enable more efficient Facebook-stalking ... in a positive, privacy-protected wa of course.

The tool essentially allows you to put natural queries into a search engine to make it easier to mine information from the massive Facebook ether.

Sensitive to recent privacy freak-outs around their products, Zuckerberg and Co. emphasized the “privacy awareness” of the new search engine.

“You want a search tool that gives you access to just things that people have shared with you,” he said. “I can only search for what I can already see on Facebook."

“You can only search for the content people have shared with you."

What do you think you might use Facebook Graph Search for? Does it intimidate you, given the recent privacy concerns at FB? Are you just like "meh"?
  • “Photos of Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan”
  • “Friends who like Star Wars and Harry Potter.” (Stocky has 16 such friends.)
  • “Languages my friends speak”
  • “Music liked by people who like Mitt Romney” and “Music liked by people who like Obama”(Beatles was the only common ground
  • “Indian restaurants liked by my friends from India“
  • “People who like trail running/road trips/dancing” (Better ways to figure out who you want to hang out with)
  • “Photos of Facebook employees”
  • “People named Chris who are friends with Lars and went to Stanford” (To connect with someone you met briefly and want to track down)
  • “My friends of friends who are single men and San Francisco residents and who are from India”

What They Say:

“We found a place and it was good,” he reported.

“I can only search for what I can already see on Facebook,” added director of product management, Tom Stocky.

“It’s useful for dating,” said Stocky, performing that last search on behalf of his wife’s cousin who is single.

“This is some really neat stuff,” says Zuckerberg. “This is the coolest thing we’ve done in a while."

“Any time we roll out a completely new way to see information on Facebook, people always ask what new things people will be able to see,” says Zuckerberg. “We take this really seriously.”

1D (One Direction) Tour Dates

Performer Info

One Direction: While they may be singing contest runners-up, One Direction isn’t taking a back seat on tour dates or in the charts. This boy band sensation has taken both teens and adults around the world by storm, and they’ve only just begun.

The lads of One Direction – Zayn, Liam, Louis, Niall, and Harry – first met while individually auditioning for X-Factor in the UK.

While the group didn’t end up in 1st place they did enthrall Simon Cowell, who signed the young men to his label and broke them in with tour dates for X-Factor.

With a great group dynamic already established, One Direction released their debut album, Up All Night, which featured the #1 single “What Makes You Beautiful.” The album was a huge hit in the UK upon its release in 2011, and went gold when it was released in the US in early 2012.

While fans wait in giddy schoolgirl anticipation for the release of One Direction’s second album to be released sometime in 2013

they’re flocking to the remaining tour dates all around the world. Keep checking Eventful for all of One Direction’s upcoming concert dates and buy your tickets early!

CONTOUR-Largest Snowball Fight

CONTOUR - Breaking the World Record for Largest Snowball Fight

5,800 tossing snow.

Seattle residents won a place in the Guinness World Records for the largest snowball fight when about 5,800 people turned out at the Seattle Center in the shadow of the Space Needle to toss snowballs at one another.

More than 30 truckloads of snow were brought in from Cascades for Saturday’s event, which included a snow fort building competition and pub crawl. Snow Day was a fundraiser for the Boys and Girls Clubs of King County.

Seattle beat the previous record of about 5,400 at a 2010 snowball fight in South Korea.

It took more than three months of planning and high-tech monitoring to make sure an afternoon of fun met Guinness criteria for record-setting, said organizer Neil Bergquist.

About 6,000 tickets were sold online, and participants were given bar-coded wristbands that were scanned as they entered and left the location, so at any time they had an instant count.

 Rules:

Then for the official minute-and-a-half snowball fight there were 130 judges watching for pacifists.

Anyone not throwing snowballs was deducted from the total, Bergquist said Monday.

With that kind of real-time information, it was an easy call for Guinness adjudicator Philip Robertson to declare a record and present a certificate.

Guinness was still updating its website Monday, said spokeswoman Jamie Panas in the New York office.

 What they Say:

Bergquist said he got the idea for a snowball fight fundraiser to have fun and raise money for kids “by remembering what it was like to feel like a kid.”

“We had a lot of fun, set a Guinness record, raised some money for kids, and everyone had a chance to act like a kid for a day,” Bergquist said.

After trucking in snow and other costs, the event raised about $50,000 for the Boys and Girls Clubs.

It was a side project for Bergquist, who is a director at Surf Incubator, which provides office space, consulting and other resources for tech startups.

3D prints With Videos

3D print yourself something big, piece by piece:

If you believe the hype, 3D printing means that no one is ever going to need to go out shopping again for that spatula, laundry basket, kitchen table or even gun. But there's a problem. The size of the objects you can print is limited by the volume of your 3D printer.

Another link for Chopper: Partitioning Models into 3D-Printable Parts

Chopper partitions a given 3D model into parts that are small enough to be 3D-printed and assembled into the original model. Left to right: the input chair model, Chopper’s partition (with a printing volume shown as a reference), printed parts, and assembled chair.

Abstract
3D printing technology is rapidly maturing and becoming ubiquitous. One of the remaining obstacles to wide-scale adoption is that the object to be printed must fit into the working volume of the 3D printer. We propose a framework, called Chopper, to decompose a large 3D object into smaller parts so that each part fits into the printing volume. These parts can then be assembled to form the original object. We formulate a number of desirable criteria for the partition, including assemblability, having few components, unobtrusiveness of the seams, and structural soundness. Chopper optimizes these criteria and generates a partition either automatically or with user guidance. Our prototype outputs the final decomposed parts with customized connectors on the interfaces. We demonstrate the effectiveness of Chopper on a variety of non-trivial real-world objects.

A new software tool developed by Linjie Luo at Princeton University and colleagues automatically breaks up large 3D models into components that a smaller printer can make, adding connectors to clip the whole object together. The software, called Chopper, works by analysing a 3D model before printing and breaking it down in an optimal way. Object seams are placed as far away as possible from areas of high mechanical stress, also splitting the object into as few sections as possible.
