Google Code is Google's site for developer tools, APIs and technical resources. The site contains documentation on using Google developer tools and APIs—including discussion groups and blogs for developers using Google's developer products.

The site contains reference information for community based developer products that Google is involved with like Android from the Open Handset Alliance and OpenSocial from the OpenSocial Foundation.

Google closed a lot of useful services to focus on Google+ and other core offerings. One of the best services that was recently shut down is Code Search, a search engine for open source code. 

Ajax APIs

Google's Ajax APIs let a developer implement rich, dynamic websites entirely in JavaScript and HTML. A developer can create a map to a site, a dynamic search box, or download feeds with just a few lines of JavaScript.

Ads APIs

The AdSense and AdWords APIs, based on the SOAP data exchange standard, allow developers to integrate their own applications with these Google services. The AdSense API allows owners of websites and blogs to manage AdSense sign-up, content and reporting, while the AdWords API gives AdWords customers programmatic access to their AdWords accounts and campaigns.

Gears

Gears was beta software offered by Google to enable offline access to services that normally only work online. It installed a database engine, based on SQLite, on the client system to cache data locally. Gears-enabled pages used data from this local cache rather than from the online service. Using Gears, a web application may periodically synchronize the data in the local cache with the online service. If a network connection is not available, the synchronization is deferred until a network connection is established. Thus Gears enabled web applications to work even though access to the network service is not present. Gears is currently discontinued.

Better Than Batteries: A Hybrid Car That Runs on Air

Those in love know the sensation of walking on air. So perhaps it's no surprise that the romantic French would develop a car that gets amazing gas mileage by running on air.

Getting a car to move at respectable speeds with compressed air is hard. Very hard.

“Hybrid Air” is a concept hybrid car that uses a “compressed air tank mounted in the central transmission tunnel to turn a hydraulic motor” instead of an electric battery, according to Green Car Reports.

French automaker Peugeot Citroen's latest automotive innovation named "Hybrid Air" operates on compressed air, gasoline or a combination of the two, DigitalTrends.com reports. At speeds above 43 mph (70 kilometers per hour), the car uses a standard three-cylinder gasoline engine with an automatic transmission.



There have been prototype cars since the 1920s, with compressed air used in torpedo propulsion.



when the driver slows down below 43 mph, as in typical city driving, the car uses compressed air to power a hydraulic motor, allowing the gasoline engine to shut down. When climbing a steep hill or accelerating, the two powertrains work together to give the car the extra oomph it needs, according to MotorAuthority.com.


A car with a compressed air tank is also much lighter. According to MotorAuthority, the Hybrid Air tank would only add about 220 pounds to the car, compared to the 400-pound batteries found in hybrid cars such as the Chevy Volt.

Refueling could be done at home using an air compressor or at service stations. The energy required for compressing air is produced at large centralized plants, making it less costly and more effective to manage carbon emissions than from individual vehicles. However, compressors for 250-300 bars are not normally available for home standard utilization, considering the danger inheritant to these pressure levels.



Compressed air engines reduce the cost of vehicle production, because there is no need to build a cooling system, spark plugs, starter motor, or mufflers.

The rate of self-discharge is very low opposed to batteries that deplete their charge slowly over time. Therefore, the vehicle may be left unused for longer periods of time than electric cars.

Expansion of the compressed air lowers its temperature; this may be exploited for use as air conditioning.

Some mechanical configurations may allow energy recovery during braking by compressing and storing air.

Sweden’s Lund University reports that buses could see an improvement in fuel efficiency of up to 60 percent using an air-hybrid system But this only refers to hybrid air concepts (due to recuperation of energy during braking), not compressed air-only vehicles.

The principal disadvantage is the indirect use of energy. Energy is used to compress air, which in turn provides the energy to run the motor. Any conversion of energy between forms results in loss. 

For conventional combustion motor cars, the energy is lost when chemical energy in fossil fuels is converted to mechanical energy, most of which goes to waste as lost heat. 

For compressed-air cars, energy is lost when chemical energy is converted to electrical energy, when electrical energy is converted to compressed air, and then when the compressed air is converted into mechanical energy.



When air expands in the engine it cools dramatically and must be heated to ambient temperature using a heat exchanger. 

The heating is necessary in order to obtain a significant fraction of the theoretical energy output. The heat exchanger can be problematic: while it performs a similar task to an intercooler for an internal combustion engine, the temperature difference between the incoming air and the working gas is smaller.
In heating the stored air, the device gets very cold and may ice up in cool, moist climates.



This also leads to the necessity of completely dehydrating the compressed air. If any humidity subsists in the compressed air, the engine will stop due to inner icing.
Removing the humidity completely requires even additional energy that cannot be reused and is lost.
The AirCar would not be in vain

What makes Peugeot's car greener than your average Prius is a technology known as "regenerative braking," DigitalTrends.com reports. In regenerative braking, the car's compressed air storage tanks are refilled with air by harnessing the energy created every time the driver brakes energy that's usually just dissipated as heat.

And because the car uses no heavy batteries to store electricity, it's lighter than many hybrid cars offered today. Peugeot's Hybrid Air car is currently a concept vehicle, but the company expects to have the vehicle available for purchase by 2016.

This unique hybrid system will give the passenger car a whopping 117 mpg (2 liters per 100 kilometers), according to the Daily Mail.

Power napping increases productivity by 34%, and with this in mind the Ostrich Pillow was born – the perfect companion to nap, disconnect and dream. Your little private space within a public one, to relax and unwind. Crazy concept, but we love it.
 

Working patterns are constantly evolving. We gradually spend more time in our working environments, and this in turn means that we often need to make work and rest fully compatible within the same space. Some cultures have assimilated this concept more naturally than others, but in general the workplace has rarely adapted to this new working-resting paradigm.

OSTRICH offers a micro environment in which to take a warm and comfortable power nap at ease. It is neither a pillow nor a cushion, nor a bed, nor a garment, but a bit of each at the same time. Its soothing cave-like interior shelters and isolates our head and hands (mind, senses and body) for a few minutes, without needing to leave our desk.

We cover a lot of concepts, often deliberately ridiculous. Not so that they'll never exist, but to make you think: why not build "earthscrapers" that pierce deep into the Earth? We first saw the ridiculously great Ostrich Pillow last year, and now, after a successful Kickstarter, it's being made into a fully realized product.

10 Big Tech Flops Of 2012

2012 saw some big fat failures from tech companies, which proved consumers can even be a fickle bunch of people and the best minds can come up with an occasional loser. It does not seem to be hard at all to come up with a list of tech failures. So let’s track all the tech flops that took place from the second half of 2012 as listed out by Yahoo.

10 BlackBerry

Also called as CrackBerrys, they were seen everywhere and people could not put them off their minds. 2012’s one biggest flop is the BlackBerry’s announcement of new OS BB10. It was never released that year as it had promised. This was supposed to be RIMs comeback for the BlackBerry brand and it sounded exciting enough for fans who waited for it. But now that it has been released, the BlackBerry faithful are getting their hopes back again. The rest have totally lost interest.

9 Nokia Lumia 900

Nokia and Microsoft launched their first Major phone together in the U.S. in the beginning of 2012. This may sound newsy because almost no one bought the Lumia 900. But now Microsoft has a smaller share of the Smartphone market and Nokia is trying hard to win eyes with its new comeback, Lumia 920.

This is sad news because the Finnish Company did a great deal and Lumia 900 was the best Windows Phone available when it was launched. The unibody design was smart looking and it came with a beautiful 4.3 inch screen and 8 megapixel camera. But no one really cared.

8 3D Televisions

The 3D HDTV was not introduced in 2012, which was the year for it to become irrelevant. It was a hot product when seen at the Consumer Electronic Show in 2010. The reason was to give a new ‘Avatar’ experience in your living room.  It was sure that most of us wanted it.
Despite a 3% rate of adoption in American homes, the industry has not abandoned the 3D HDTVs yet. It is still seen on the shelves of most major retailers. The glasses can be bulky, inducing headache. Picture quality in these televisions varies greatly and their initial prices were too high for most.

All we need is to expect less 3D content coming out while these TVs- which are completely capable of excellent 2D performance decrease in profile and price.

7 Sean Parker’s Airtime

Sean Parker’s Airtime was an insanely hyped startup, which turned out to be a whole lot of nothing. Airtime was this founder’s response to ‘Chatroulette’, a place to meet new people through webcam, text chat and mic. It was supposed to revolutionize communication through Facebook.

This did not happen because Airtime suffered from stagnant user base despite its $33 million in funding also with a somewhat infamous June opening press conference with stars such as Jim Carrey and Alicia Keys and the blessing of cool comics Jimmy Fallon and Julia Louis Dreyfus.  Parker later added that the site was getting only 10,000 active users per day. However, he maintained that the product would transform how we communicate.

6 Apple Maps

Steve Jobs might have built the mighty Apple which may be a juggernaut. But the mighty company can also make mistake. Apple Maps was proved to be a complete disaster that CEO Tim Cook had to apologize for. He said that Apple strived to make world-class products that deliver the best experience possible to our customers and with the launch of the new Maps, they fell short on doing this commitment. He also added that they were extremely sorry for the frustration this had caused to the customers and were doing everything to make Maps better.

With Google taking years to assemble and fine tune its product, Apple could not make it anyway with its cleverness and hubris. Fancy new features such as 3D imagery and spoken turn-by—turn couldn’t save this product riddled with errors.

5 Play Station Vita

Vita came out with a bunch of cool things. It had amazing graphics, excellent design and build quality. It promised a strong online community and cross play with the PS3. It was also well received at the launch, but is yet to get the killer app it needs to become – a ‘must have’ platform. Vita could be titled as ‘Call of Duty’, Black Ops’ or even ‘Declassified’ instead, it was an absolute mess.

Not even one or two blockbuster games could change this momentum as none was them were seen on the immediate horizon. As of now PlayStation Vita has become a chilling answer of the viability of handheld gaming consoles in a world filled with game-effective machines - Smartphones.

4 Google Nexus Q

Google’s Nexus Q was a mess. The company decided to postpone the launch of this high profile hardware product indefinitely just days before it was expected to ship the first units. The hardware was supposed to be an innovative entertainment in-house device but was pulled off before it was sold to its consumers.

Besides this, there was a noticeable price tag of $299 (approx.  15,000) that Google attached on the device. The speakers were for $399(approx.  21, 000) and a pair of cables which was insanely priced at $49 (approx.  2110) added to the increasing price tag.
As impressive as the hardware specs were, it was a little more than an Apple TV aimed at Android users. The Apple TV sold for a fraction of what Google was asking of Nexus Q. It also seemed overpriced as the Nexus 7 which started at $199 (approx.  10,000) was also announced alongside. Making a big deal out of the design and manufacture did not even justify the considerable price tag.

3 Oprah’s love for Microsoft

Oprah gave Microsoft Surface some props on Twitter and what seemed awkward as she used her Apple iPad to tweet it off.

The tweet said that she loved the Surface and had brought 12 of them as Christmas gifts. The controversial tweet, noticed by Zagg and The Next Web as early as possible, received more than 400 ‘retweets’ and more than 170 ‘favorites’. She praised the Surface Microsoft’s tablet to be like a Mercedes-Benz to her.

Twitter revealed this through their metadata which usually notes which devices or apps users are using when they tweet.
Though Apple iPad was her favorite in 2010, her praises for technology seem to change time and again as with this controversial tweet.

Tim Cook’s first major hire as CEO was a big flop. John Brownett who came from Dixons to Apple, tried to put his own stamp on one of the most successful retail shops in the world by cutting back employee hours to make the stores more profitable. That didn’t go so well and in a few months Browett was gone.

Between 2009 and 2012 the First Person Shooter Pro made $135,000 (£83,000) from winning four different Call of Duty titles on the Major League Gaming Pro Circuit.

  Soccer-mad Jacob was challenged by his brother to see how many goals he could score against the computer.  By half-time he had scored over 100 goals, and by the full-time whistle he had set a new record winning 189-0 playing as Barcelona FC against Fulham FC.  Jacob, who spends around seven hours a week playing FIFA, says: "It's incredible to have the record, but I can't let it go to my head - I've got my school exams coming up!"

Welshman Jann Mardenborough is another to be recognised.  Aged 19 he became the Youngest GT Academy Winner

The amount of time, money and effort we invest in our phones is staggering. In a relatively short space of time they have become the focal point of our daily lives, bringing together business, social interaction, gaming and music.




Bearing this in mind, imagine if you were to have your beloved handset stolen, or you were to lose it somewhere without any hope of ever getting it back. Even if you're a moderate mobile user, it would be akin to losing a limb, particularly when NFC mobile payment becomes more prominent.






Prey Anti-Theft is an application that attempts to remove the potential pain and heartbreak of losing your handset. Once installed, it waits for an activation SMS message - which you can select when you configure the app - and then kicks into action. The idea being that when you realise your phone is stolen of missing, you send an SMS containing the activation message to your phone number, and then Prey automatically uses the handset's GPS system (or Wi-Fi) to relay its present location to the main Prey website.
