Wired Collar Turns You Into a Musical Human Speaker

This weird-looking collar might resemble a neck brace, but its actual function is much more interesting. Nic Wallenberg‘s The Human Speaker turns its wearer into, well, a human speaker. The collar bypasses the vocal chords and acts as the wearer’s voicebox, using the mouth and lips as an amplifier for some funky electronic sounds.



The Human Speaker attaches around the neck, collar-style, and can emit up to two notes at a time. The user controls the sounds with his mouth, manipulating and amplifying them to make some truly unique music

Although each collar is only capable of producing two notes, multiple collar-wearing people can get together to make Bohemian Rhapsody-type harmonies. Wallenberg’s video is a fun demonstration of the kind of music possible with this odd futuristic-looking instrument.

LG Promies G2 The best EXPERIENCE

LG’s new G2 promises to be a one-of-a-kind experience

LG took to the stage in NYC today to announce their latest Android smartphone, the G2. Their hope with this phone is to be the most ambitious and exciting handheld on the market today, a phone that learns from the user.



LG believes that innovation requires a combination of technology improvements and empathy. Their product development cycle for their latest phone, according to LG, is enhanced with a focus on consumer feedback. The end result is a new phone called the G2, which tries to embody everything LG has gained from its customer feedback and user trials.

LG G2 back The first thing you’ll notice about the G2 is the new button configuration. The volume rocker sits on the back, just under the camera. This isn’t quite so strange when you think about how most people hold their phones, but when compared to most smartphones this is a significant different. With nothing on the sides of the phone, the G2 is able to achieve a 5.2-inch full HD IPS display with very little bezel around the display. It’s a design that stands out as soon as you see it, without looking awkward or terribly different.

In between the volume buttons is the power button, which bulges just slightly for your finger to rest your finger on. The buttons are also used for quick actions like launching the camera. LG calls this configuration the Rear Key, and there’s not anything quite like it out there right now.

Qualcomm’s Steve Mollenkopf joined LG on stage to discuss their long time relationship, as well as explain the benefits of the Snapdragon 800 processor on the G2. The chipset in the G2, as Mollenkopf explains, is the result of thousands of hours of research and optimization to provide a high performance phone that blows away the competition. We’ve seen the Snapdragon 800 perform incredibly well when not optimized at all, so it will be very interesting to see what LG and Qualcomm have done together.

LG has some big claims in their G2 presentation that they say beats the competition hands down.The camera on the G2 is a 13MP sensor with a sapphire crystal cover and Optical Image Stabilization. The camera promises to do well in low light and doesn’t awkwardly stick out of the phone. LG’s camera software in the past has been crammed full of features in the past, and it looks like their latest phone is more than capable of competing in the smartphone camera arena. The speakers claim to be capable of delivering Hi-Fi, professional quality audio. Their software includes a couple of high quality ringtones made specifically for the phone that try to prove this point.

Finally, LG’s big claim that their new phone will learn from you is explained with their series of in-house developed features. The G2 can be woken up by knocking on the phone, lets you answer the phone when ringing just by picking the phone up, and and automatically start a special entertainment launcher when you plug in headphones. The software can apply context from information in your text messages and allow you to book calendar appointments or search the web from the contents of an SMS.

Guest Mode is another feature, allowing you to set a second profile based on a gesture unlock that allows you to share your phone without sharing your accounts.
LG plans to make the G2 available on the four major US carriers as well as an undefined number of international carriers, something the company has needed to do for quite a while now. The company has certainly put their best foot forward with the G2, but with the fierce competition in the smartphone space right now it will be interesting to see how well this phone actually stands out.

Squito™ Throwable 360° Panoramic Camera


Get ready to get your wallet out! A Boston-based designer has created a throwable device fitted with three panoramic cameras.

As the Squito, as it’s known, is thrown from one person to another, the built-in cameras take multiple airborne photos over the full course of the trajectory.

It uses orientation sensors to know when to take the images before stitching the multiple pictures together to create a single panoramic aerial shot.

The throwable camera was designed by inventor Steve Hollinger from Massachusetts and a patent for the device was granted this week.

Squito is the size of a tennis ball and is fitted with three cameras, an inertial measurement unit (IMU) – or orientation sensor – a microcontroller and image processor.

Hollinger’s patent describes the ball-shaped camera as having position sensors that can detemine whether the camera is spiraling or spinning as well as the location of the subject.

Stabilisers also mean that the images taken don’t appear blurred or out of focus.

Squito is also capable of registering the individual frames captured in a sequence.

The camera can then use all of these features to create a seamless panoramic aerial photo.

These images are sent wirelessly to the user’s phone, tablet or desktop.
Squito can also take video clips.

‘Throwable camera innovations are accelerating with advancements in sensor and imaging microelectronics,’ said Hollinger.

‘And with the advent of low-cost, high-speed cameras for outdoor recreation, an affordable throwable camera is finally within reach.’

Hollinger has created a protoype of Squito and, now that the patent has been granted, he plans to manufacture the device for commercial and industrial use.

He claims Squito can be used for sport, architecture, search-and-rescue operations, landscape photography and more.

The ball can be thrown into dangerous or unstable buildings, for example, to take 360-degree photos of the inside.

Squito can also be used with thermal imaging cameras to help emergency services find bodies in buildings.

Hollinger is developing a second Squito model that can capture slow-motion, full-spherical video of subjects visible from a bird’s-eye view along the trajectory.

15 year old girl (Ann Makosinski) invents flashlight powered by body heat!!

One teenage girl is about to make you feel like a complete underachiever.

 Think about all the accomplishments you’ve attained in your life – things like getting a college degree, buying a first home, landing the perfect job, or successfully modding your own supercomputer. Hold on to those thoughts tightly. This is your ARCHIEVER.

At the age of 15, Ann Makosinski of Victoria, British Columbia is one of the 15 finalists for this year’s Google Science Fair competition.



Her project: A modded flashlight powered by the heat produced within the holder’s palms. Since the sixth grade,
Makosinski says she has been interested in alternative energy and wanted to figure out a way to generate power from a source that’ll last as long as humans live. Her research brought her to the concept of Peltier tiles, which produces energy when one side of the tile is heated and the other side is cooled. To get the tiles to create more voltage, Makosinski spent years reworking the circuit until it provided enough power to light an LED.

“This took quite awhile ’cause I had to do it during the school year as well and I had homework, plays, whatever that I was also doing,” she told CBC News. Her speech still hints of adolescence. ”You just kind of have to keep going.” Despite her parents’ lack of post-secondary science education, they’ve always encouraged Ann to pursue her passion for the subject. Her father helped her order various Peltier tiles off eBay so she could continue her experiments.

In the end, the working prototype is an aluminum tube and PVC tube, both working together so that the hollows would allow air to cool one side of the Peltier tile while the user’s hand transfers heat to the other. In her tests, Makosinski found that the flashlight worked better at 5 degrees Celcius (41 degrees Fahrenheit) because it allowed the cooler air to circulate, generating more power. But even at 10 degrees Celcius (50 degrees Fahrenheit), the light maintained a steady glow for more than 20 minutes.

Makosinski will be traveling to Mountain View, CA to present her project to Google this September. If she wins the grand prize, she’ll walk away with $50,000 and a trip to the Galapagos Islands. With the production cost per flashlight at approximately $26, Makosinski will be able to make lots of devices if she wins – and one would imagine economy of scale should make mass production even cheaper for customers.

Sit back and relax! You no longer have to tell your kids bedtime stories. That’s the job of the smart pajamas you’ve just bought. Before you know it, the social services will be knockin’ at your door and you’ll prolly end up in jail.

At least that’s what should happen to parents who neglect their children and let gadgets decide the fate of the little ones. It’s a good thing that technology solves many of our problems and various gadgets can successfully replace humans in certain activities, but I’m pretty sure that telling bedtime stories isn’t among them. In fact, hearing your voice will tighten the connection between you two (or three, or more, if you’ve had twins). 



According to the manufacturer, each pair comes with a series of dot patterns that can be scanned with the help of a smart device. There you go! They claim that you own a smartphone or a tablet, so this business has been started with a precise target audience in mind.

Multiple such dot patterns are placed on the surface of the pajamas, so one night you could read your kid a story that sits on his chest, while on another night you could go for the one on his left leg. Now the next time he misses a story, he won’t have to go to the library anymore. Teaching him to open the dresser drawer will suffice.

The Smart PJs will be available for $25, but there has been no mention of the retailers carrying them. At least the price is not abominable. If you want your child to be normal, please read him bedtime stories yourself, or at least teach him how to read. He will definitely enjoy that more than hearing some other voice right before falling asleep.

Solar power might have just got a lot more convenient. The Window Socket offers a neat way to harness solar energy and use it as a plug socket. So far we have seen solutions that act as a solar battery backup, but none as a direct plug-in.

Coated Cotton Catches Desert Fog to Make Safe Drinking Water



This environmental water would be unavailable for drinking without the intelligent use of readily-available materials. It was this adaptive use that inspired researchers at the Eindhoven University of Technology to create a specially coated cotton that can capture moisture from nightly fogs and turn it into perfectly pure drinking water as the sun warms it. 
Under normal conditions, cotton can only absorb 18 percent of its weight in moisture. After applying a polymer to the cotton known as PNIPAAm, the cloth is able to absorb an amazing 340 percent of its own weight in liquid.
The coated cotton is hydrophilic (or absorbent) at lower temperatures, but when it warms up it is hydrophobic – it actually repels water. The fibers on the left are the cotton in a hydrophilic state and those on the right are the cotton in its hydrophobic state.



The water is safe to consume and the polymer-coated cotton stands up to repeated uses. The researchers are now just looking for ways to improve the fabric’s performance – then we may see it used to make moisture-collecting tents or athletic clothing that that keeps sweat away from skin.

Scientists at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in the Netherlands have developed a special surface modified cotton fabric that absorbs exceptional amounts of water from misty air for up to 340% of its own weight. What makes this coated-cotton so interesting is that the cotton releases the collected water as the temperature rises.
This ground-breaking research was done by Professor John Xin, Head and Chair Professor of PolyU's Institute of Textiles and Clothing (ITC); his PhD graduate Dr Hengrui Yang; and Dr Catarina Esteves at TU/e. The finding has been published on line and will go to print in the scientific journal Advanced Materials (Issue 8, February 2013). 
The scientists grafted a layer of polymer called PNIPAAm to a common cotton fabric. At low temperatures, the cotton modified in this way has a sponge-like structure at microscopic level. Up to a temperature of 34°C it is highly hydrophilic, in other words it absorbs water strongly. Through this property the cotton can absorb 340 % of its own weight of water from misty air – compared with only 18% of water from bare cotton.

A further advantage is that the basic material – cotton fabric – is cheap and widely produced. The surface modification with PNIPAAm increases the cost only slightly by 12% which makes the application of the new fabric viable.

The spongy fabric absorbs moisture directly from the air when it is foggy, releasing it as water when the material cools. Every kilogram (two pounds, three ounces) of the fabric produces 7.2 pints of liquid water, and the process is repeatable. This material could be used as a component of free-standing water-collecting devices for deserts and dry mountain regions, and as additives for agricultural soils in drought-prone areas. Work continues on tuning the temperature at which water condenses from the material in hopes of developing it on a commercial scale.

(Why)Microsoft say Windows 8 flop (May be W8=VISTA 2.0) ?


Microsoft’s Windows 8 software appears to be driving buyers away from PC.


They go Toward smartphones and tablets, research firm IDC said Wednesday. That’s leading to the fastest drop in PC sales the firm has ever seen.

Global shipments of PCs fell 14% in the first three months this year, IDC said. That’s the sharpest plunge since the firm started tracking the industry in 1994.

The report comes after a year of bad news for the PC. Consumers, especially in wealthy countries like the U.S., are steering their dollars toward tablets and smartphones rather than upgrading their home PCs. It’s the biggest challenge to the personal computer since the IBM PC was released in 1981.

In an attempt to keep the PC relevant, Microsoft released a radical new version of Windows on Oct 26. Windows 8 has a completely new look and forces users to learn new ways to control their machines.

“Unfortunately, it seems clear that the Windows 8 launch not only didn't provide a positive boost to the PC market, but appears to have slowed the market,IDC Vice President Bob O’Donnell said.

The newest version of Windows is designed to work well with touch-sensitive screens, but the displays add to the cost of a PC. Together, the changes and higher prices “have made PCs a less attractive alternative to dedicated tablets and other competitive devices,” O’Donnell said.

Representatives of Microsoft Corp were not immediately available for comment.

Another research firm, Gartner Inc, reported an 11 percent decline in PC shipments in the quarter. That, too, is the sharpest decline it’s seen since it started tracking the market in 2001.

Hewlett-Packard Co., the world’s largest maker of PCs, saw a 24% drop in shipments in the first quarter compared with the same period a year ago. The industry’s No. 2, China’s Lenovo Group, is benefiting from sales to first-time buyers in China and other developing countries. As a result, it held sales steady, alone among the world’s top 5 PC makers, according to IDC’s figures.

Gartner noted one bright spot: Businesses are buying more PCs, and account for about half of the market.

Both firms track shipments of PCs from the manufacturer rather than retail sales. Shipments correlate closely with sales. The figures include shipments of Apple’s Macs, which account for about 5% of the worldwide market.

Fujitsu develops touchscreen interface for seamless data transfer between real and virtual worlds



Fujitsu Laboratories has developed a next generation user interface which can accurately detect the users finger and what it is touching, creating an interactive touchscreen-like system, using objects in the real word.

“We think paper and many other objects could be manipulated by touching them, as with a touchscreen. This system doesn't use any special hardware; it consists of just a device like an ordinary webcam, plus a commercial projector. Its capabilities are achieved by image processing technology,” a Fujitsu spokesman said.

Using this technology, information can be imported from a document as data, by selecting the necessary parts with your finger.



This technology measures the shape of real-world objects, and automatically adjusts the coordinate systems for the camera, projector, and real world. In this way, it can coordinate the display with touching, not only for flat surfaces like tables and paper, but also for the curved surfaces of objects such as books.

“Until now, gesturing has often been used to operate PCs and other devices. But with this interface, we’re not operating a PC, but touching actual objects directly, and combining them with ICT equipment,” said the Fujitsu spokesman. 

“The system is designed not to react when you make ordinary motions on a table. It can be operated when you point with one finger. What this means is, the system serves as an interface combining analog operations and digital devices.”


To detect touch accurately, the system needs to detect fingertip height accurately. In particular, with the low-resolution camera used here (320 x 180), if fingertip detection is off by a single pixel, the height changes by 1 cm. So, the system requires technology for recognizing fingertips with high precision.

Using a low-res webcam gives a fuzzy picture, but the system calculates 3D positions with high precision, by compensating through image processing.

This system also includes technology for controlling color and brightness, in line with the ambient light, and correcting for individual differences in hand color. In this way, it can identify fingertips consistently, with little influence from the environment or individual differences.



Also, in situations that don’t use touch, the system can be operated by gesturing. In this demo, when you move your fist, you can manipulate the viewpoint for 3D CAD data. So, there could be applications for this touch system by combining it with current gesture systems.

“For example, we think this system could be used to show detailed information at a travel agent’s counter, or when you need to fill in forms at City Hall,” said the Fujitsu spokesman.

“We aim to develop a commercial version of this system by fiscal 2014. It’s still at the demonstration level, so it’s not been used in actual settings. Next, we’d like to get people to use it for actual tasks, see what issues arise, and evaluate usability. We want to reflect such feedback in this system.”

Google Glass upto $2 million!!

The time approaches for the launch of the Google’s wearable Glass, it has already grabbed attention of three prominent venture capital firms of the Silicon Valley.

Google unveiled their Google Glass last year in June at the Google I/O conference, and investors of Silicon Valley have already started to fund the app makers so that they can develop apps that could run on the Google Glass.

The most prominent investors of the Silicon Valley announced to support developers who are making apps to use on the device.

Bill Maris, managing partner at Google Ventures, Marc Andreessen of Andreessen Horowitz, and John Doerr of Kleiner Perkins declared on Wednesday that they are all together launching The Glass Collective. 

The group venture consist of some of the major technology venture capital firms, including Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers also the investors in Zynga, Groupon, and Twitter, Andreessen Horowitz  investors of Instagram, Foursquare, and Facebook, and Google’s own investment division, Google Ventures.

“I saw a first prototype of Glass at a confidential briefing in September 2011, [and the] experience was, well, eye-opening,” said John Doerr  of Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. “It’s early days, but we believe the potential for Glass exceeds what’s possible on today’s platforms. It goes well beyond the world of websites, documents, and mobile apps.”
In fact, Doerr has been on Google’s board of directors since May 1999.


The capital firms are expected to arrange seed funding varying from $250,000 to $2 million that will support the developers in making software and other gear built for Google Glass.

Marc Andreessen, general partner at Andreessen Horowitz said about the Glass, “Instead of having a phone in your pocket or a tablet in your briefcase, why not have the Internet in your field of vision when you want it — and why not feed the Internet with live video and audio that matches what you see and hear at any time.”
“Every once in a while, one of these things comes along and you go, `Whoa, that looks like it’s the future,’” Andreessen added.
The Glass Collective is expected to extend the anticipation surrounding Google Glass, the device that Google co-founder Sergey Brin and his team of engineers have been making for the past two years.

Bill Maris, managing partner of Google Ventures, had said when he first saw the Glass that, “It was kind of a cellphone duct taped through a pair of sunglasses.”


“Any entrepreneur working with us is going to get triple the feedback, investment and support,” said Bill Maris of Google Ventures. “This is going to be an unprecedented level of cooperation.”

However, the Google Glass is still not expected to be launched to the mass market until next year.

GoPro is a brand privately owned company in San Mateo, California Woodman Labs that features "wearable" camera/camcorders such as helmet cameras that are targeted at adventure video/photography.

Widely used by professionals and hobbyists, the cameras have been used to film inside of the mouths of alligators, sharks and polar bears.



The company was formed by Nick Woodman. Woodman said he was inspired to start the company following a 2002 Australia surfing trip in which he was hoping to capture quality action photos of his surfing, but could not because amateur photographers could not get close enough, or obtain quality equipment at accessible prices. His desire for a camera system that could capture the professional angles inspired the 'GoPro' name

In 2004 the company sold its first camera system—a 35 mm film version.



The cameras evolved, going from 35mm to digital, where it started recording 10 second clips, to 3 Megapixel digital cameras to its current configuration of having fixed lens cameras with a wide 170 degree angle in high definition 1080p cinema quality video. Two cameras can be connected to create 3D video.

The camera spec sheet notes they have a proprietary 1050 mAh lithium-ion battery (HERO3), Aperture: f/2.8, and rated >1.4 V/lux-sec in video mode.

Photon 3D Scanner Unleashes the Power of 3D Printing



A number of projects have revolved around producing 3D printers that are affordable and portable so that anyone who wants one can own one.

This is in addition to the printers that are already available on the market. Let’s see. There’s the MakerBot, the Gigabot, the RigitBot, the Form 1, the Cube… I think it’s safe to say we now have a rich selection to choose from when it comes to 3D printers. The problem now is getting templates for the stuff you want to print.



Not everyone has the technical skill or know-how to create CAD drawings or 3D models, and there’s only so much that you can download off the Internet. It’s precisely for these reasons why the Photon 3D Scanner is a godsend.

The Photon is basically a 3D scanner for the masses. It’s affordable (it’s cheaper than some tablets!) and it’s easy to use. All you have to do is unfold it, plug it in, and place the object that you want to scan on the scan bed. Press ‘go’, wait until it finishes scanning, and you’re all set. You don’t even have to own your own 3D printer because you can just take your models to Shapeways or Ponoko to print your stuff.



The Photon was invented by Adam Brandejs and Drew Cox, who have been working on the prototype for the past year. Prepare to be amazed, the sensational Rolls-Royce Wraith coupe has been revealed, and it’s the most powerful Rolls ever!

Reviving a name first used by the brand in 1938, this two-door fastback coupe version of the Ghost is the most powerful Rolls-Royce ever and develops 624bhp and 800Nm from its 6.6-litre twin-turbo V12.

That eclipses the Ghost’s 563bhp, while the Wraith also has 20Nm more torque than the saloon, with the staggering 800Nm output available from only 1,500rpm. The result is 0-60mph in 4.4 seconds – that’s three-tenths up on the Ghost.



To make the Wraith more agile than the saloon, the company has also tweaked the suspension, widened the rear track and shortened the wheelbase. Rolls says the new suspension will “discreetly amplify feedback”, while the steering will weight up at high speeds.

The interior of the two-tone car on the Geneva stand looked suitably lavish with Phantom grade leathers and what CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös described as a luxrious and yacht-like interior. The steering wheel and centre console also feature more controls and switches than we have seen on previous models from the brand.

The Wraith also debuts a new Satellite Aided Transmission system. This uses satellite maps and data to help the eight-speed automatic gearbox predict corners, motorway junctions and roundabouts, and select the most appropriate gear.



Rear-hinged doors open to reveal a Ghost-inspired interior featuring new matt Canadel wood panelling. There’s also the option of Starlight headlining, with 1,340 handwoven fibre optic lights – this is the first time it’s been offered outside the Phantom.



A new voice command system allows drivers to tell the sat-nav where they want to be navigated to, while the new infotainment controller has a smartphone-style pinch to zoom facility. It even lets users draw letters for postcodes.

The Wraith is priced from 245,000 Euros, which should translate to around £220,000 when the first cars are delivered here towards the end of the year.

In later Thiruvenkadam Velupillai Prabhakaran (Tamil: வேலுப்பிள்ளை பிரபாகரன் { தமிà®´் தேசிய தலைவர் }; November 26, 1954 – May 18, 2009) was the founder and leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (the LTTE or the Tamil Tigers), a militant organization that sought to create an independent Tamil state in the north and east of Sri Lanka.

This ambush, along with the subsequent rioting which resulted in the deaths of hundreds of Tamil civilians, is generally considered the start of the Sri Lankan Civil War.

Peace talks eventually broke down, and the Sri Lanka Army launched a military campaignto defeat the Tamil Tigers in 2006.

Prabhakaran was killed in fighting with the Army on May 18, 2009. It was alleged that his 12-year old son was executed a short time later. His death brought an immediate end to the Civil War.
