Google Remote Desktop for Android Smartphone (ONLY)

You can now access your PC desktop computer directly via your smartphone or tablet.

Google announced the launch of Chrome Remote Desktop app for Android this week, which lets you access files sitting on your home PC or Mac even when you're nowhere near it.

The move builds off its Chrome Remote Desktop app launched in 2011, which let users remotely access a desktop from another laptop or computer. The service is free a stark contrast with costly remote-desktop software such as Parallels Access.

After downloading the Android app from Google Play, you'll need to install the Chrome Remote Desktop extension in a desktop's Chrome browser to connect the two systems. Then, grant access for the remote connection to work and set up a PIN code for the PC.

The PC name will then appear in the Chrome Remote Desktop page (and need to be selected) before plugging in the same PIN code within the app. Then, you're good to go.

Microsoft also has its own remote desktop app client, as does Amazon Workspaces, which lets employees access work computers from their personal devices.

By installing the app and enabling remote access on a Mac (OSX 10.6 or later), Windows machine (XP or later) or Linux, users will be able to access their computer from other computers or Android device. Google will also ask users to program a six-digit pin number for added security.

If the remote computer is on and running, people can access the remote computer from a desktop. Users just need to open a new Google Chrome tab and input the security. To access it via an Android device, simply pull up the app and plug in the pin for the remote computer.

For even the most security-conscious user can rest easily, as Google assures them that "all remote desktop sessions are fully encrypted using Chrome's SSL features." Google cannot let anyone but the user access their computer, because of the PIN and Access Code when sharing it. No session data is recorded, according to the Chrome Remote Desktop page.

According to a blog post, Google has yet to release a Remote Desktop app for iOS, but says that will be coming "later this year," without giving a definitive date.

Samsung Jumps Into the Internet Radio Race Without Ads

Samsung is the latest company with music on the brain.

The manufacturer is going up against iTunes Radio, Pandora and Spotify with its newly-announced ad-free radio service called Milk Music. The service, which is powered by Slacker and includes a library of 13 million songs, is only available for download via the Google Play store if you have a Galaxy smartphone or tablet. Even if you have an Android device, you won't be able to download the app without a Samsung Galaxy-branded device.

Similar to how you would use an old radio dial to find stations, Milk Music lets you to move your finger over the touchscreen to tune between the stations. You can choose from about 200 curated stations everything from pop hits ('80s, '90s, etc.) to jazz. You can star songs you like, add them to playlists and pick stations based on artists. A nice perk is that you don't have to sign up for an account or even log in via a social network to gain access. 

Another benefit is that Samsung promises the service will be free of ads, which can get annoying when listening to web-streaming platforms like Pandora and Spotify. Since it's powered by existing service Slacker, there aren't other features that set it apart from what's already out there. Although it has a website, Milk Music is available on mobile only.

Samsung didn't specify whether or not it would ever roll out the service to non-Galaxy devices in the future.

Facebook may finally start to recoup some of the money it paid for Instagram.

Ad Age reports that Instagram has inked an ad commitment with Omnicom, a global advertising company, for up to $100 million in ad spend over the course of a year on the social network.

A rep for Facebook confirmed the ad deal, but not the price. One source familiar with the matter told us that the price quoted in the Ad Age story was inaccurate.

"This is an exciting new chapter and we’re looking forward to the great creative content that comes out of this partnership," a Facebook rep said in a statement. "Omnicom shares our passion for and understanding of the mobile Instagram community. Along with their clients, they’ll help to continue to set a high bar for creative work that inspires people."

Instagram began testing ads in feeds for the first time in early November. Early advertisers included Michael Kors, Burberry and Ben & Jerry's. Even with the new partnership with Omnicom, Facebook says the number of ads that appear in feeds will remain "limited."

"This doesn’t change our advertising strategy moving forward," the rep said in the statement. "People will continue to see a limited number of beautiful, high–quality photos and videos from select brands who already have a strong presence on Instagram.”

Facebook stock ended the day down by about 1.5%.

One of the biggest design complaints from readers who read our original story was that the look was too reminiscent of Facebook, Instagram and Google+, and they disliked Twitter's potential move away from the vertical stream.

Petronzio's most-recently tweeted picture is significantly larger this morning too.

It's common for Twitter to quietly test new features and design updates before rolling it out to a larger user base. Experiments typically go out to a small, random pool of users.

In addition to a greater emphasis on photos, a larger header photo and a scattered timeline layout, Petronzio also noticed a change to his "following" and "followers" section, which now embrace the card design approach.

Although Petronzio isn't verified on the site, there's an option for the stream to show "Tweets" and "Tweets and replies" for every user — a feature typically reserved for those with the blue check mark.

Updates appear only to affect his profile page and not his homepage.

The news comes days after Twitter rolled out its latest design to all users, after weeks of behind the scenes testing.

It is now entirely possible that Stephen Hawking will one day not have to apologize for his American accent when he meets someone, thanks to an incredible synthetic voice system called VocalID.

Establishing a synthetic voice for someone who can’t speak is relatively easy today, but there are only so many artificial voices out there. Software generated vocal patterns are repetitive and flat, making it difficult to convey nuances or emotion during a conversation, or even to have a voice that is uniquely yours.


There’s a great deal of work in the human body that happens in order to create a unique voice, which is why it is so difficult to simulate through software alone. But the team at VocalID have figured out the best way to give someone who has lost the ability to speak, partially or completely, a human sounding voice again.

VocalID creates its finished product by combining whatever is left of the target user’s voice with voices from surrogate donor voices to create a personalized synthetic voice. This could be recordings of the user’s voice, or actual samples taken from other people (donors). The surrogate donor’s voice is used to capture the sounds that the user is unable to make on their own, but the source features from the user are applied as the dominant set. This means that while the voice may not 100% belong to the user, the same inflections and tone structure that the original voice was capable of delivering would be present in the synthetic version.

Voice ID is currently accepting applications for voice donors, technical expertise donors, and business expertise donors on their website. They are open to just about any form of contribution, and seem quite open about how they create their synthetic voices. Currently their synthetic voices are only available on Windows systems, but support for Android and iOS is on the way.

The long term applications for something like VoiceID are incredible. Even if you move away from the immediate desire to provide a voice for the voiceless, this technology could be licensed for personalized translations from one language to another and make it possible for someone to deliver something other than a robotic tone.
